A Fine Gentleman from 1903 — New York Standard Watch Co.
Some watches simply tell time. Others carry more than a century of craftsmanship and history. This handsome New York Standard pocket watch, dating to approximately 1903, is a wonderful example of early American watchmaking, featuring an elegant Roman numeral dial, small seconds display, and an exceptionally attractive ornate Defiance case.
Carefully serviced and ready for its next chapter, this distinguished antique combines mechanical character with timeless elegance.
MOVEMENT & SERVICE
The watch features a New York Standard Watch Co. Grade 60, Model 8 movement, manufactured in Jersey City, New Jersey.
The movement has been completely serviced: cleaned, oiled, and adjusted (COA). It is exceptionally clean, and the watch winds and sets correctly and easily. It runs extremely well and has demonstrated reliable timekeeping over an extended period.
The watch uses a traditional lever-setting mechanism, a feature valued by collectors of antique American pocket watches.
What does lever set mean?
Unlike a pendant-set watch, which is set by pulling out the winding crown, a lever-set pocket watch uses a small setting lever at the edge of the dial. To set the time, gently pull the lever outward and turn the crown to move the hands. When finished, push the lever back into its original position. The lever engages the time-setting mechanism, helping prevent accidental changes to the hands during winding.
DIAL & CRYSTAL
The dial features classic black Roman numerals, elegant hands, and a recessed small seconds register at 6 o’clock. A new crystal has been installed.
The original dial shows very fine, almost invisible hairline cracks between the hour-hand area and the small seconds register, as visible in the photographs. At the 6 position, invisible during daily carry, is a small chip. These are age-related signs of its long history and do not detract significantly from its overall appearance.
CASE & EXTERIOR
The watch is housed in a handsome Defiance case, serial number 7980682.
* Ornate bezel with a beautifully detailed decorative edge
* Exceptionally bright, attractive silver-tone finish
* Very few scratches on the bezel and case
* Caseback showing light wear consistent with age
* Empty cartouche, offering a clean, unengraved appearance
* Bezel and caseback unscrew smoothly and screw back on easily and precisely
* Case Diameter is 54.07 mm
The combination of the decorative case and traditional dial makes this a particularly appealing piece for a collection, a waistcoat pocket, or display.

A NOTE FOR THE NEXT OWNER
This is an antique mechanical timepiece, not a modern precision watch. Although it has been serviced and has demonstrated excellent running performance, vintage watches benefit from careful handling and should not be expected to match modern quartz accuracy.
Please examine all photographs closely. They form an important part of the description and show the watch’s actual condition.
A beautifully presented piece of early American horological history, ready to continue its journey with a new custodian.
