Chatillon by Saxony — A Swiss Time Capsule with a November 1969 Calendar
Some vintage watches tell you what time it is. This one tells you a little bit about its own history.
This fascinating vintage Chatillon by Saxony wristwatch appears to date to the early 1960s and features a Swiss mechanical movement with 17 jewels and an antimagnetic designation on the dial. The movement is marked “Sheffield Merchandise Inc. / Seventeen 17 Jewels,” while the dial carries the distinctive Chatillon by Saxony name.
The watch has been professionally inspected and cleaned, and it has received a brand-new crystal. The movement winds smoothly and is running exceptionally well — this little survivor is happily ticking away and needs very little encouragement to do its job.
But the real treasure is attached to the watch: an original-looking Speidel expandable bracelet with an integrated calendar, marked “SPEIDEL PAT 2689450.” The calendar is currently set to NOVEMBER 1969 — giving this watch the wonderful character of a tiny time capsule from the era.
A little horological history
The Chatillon name has a documented Swiss history. The CHATILLON trademark was registered in Switzerland in 1953 by Gunzinger Frères SA / Technos SA of Welschenrohr, Switzerland. That places the name firmly within the postwar Swiss watchmaking world.
The wording “BY SAXONY” appears directly on the dial of this watch and on surviving examples of the same period. Importantly, the Swiss movement and documented history of the Chatillon trademark make it inappropriate to simply interpret “BY SAXONY” as meaning “made in Saxony.” It is best preserved here exactly as the period dial presents it: Chatillon by Saxony.
The movement is marked Sheffield Merchandise Inc., a New York-based watch company active in the postwar period and associated with Swiss-made watches and movements. The movement in this watch is a 17-jewel mechanical Swiss movement, and the “ANTIMAGNETIC” marking reflects the period’s fascination with protecting mechanical watches from the increasingly magnetic environment of modern life.
And then there is the bracelet…
The Speidel bracelet carries U.S. Patent 2,689,450, granted in 1954. Speidel was famous for turning the watch bracelet itself into a useful piece of everyday technology, and calendar bracelets became one of those wonderfully ingenious mid-century accessories that combined practicality with style.
The integrated calendar on this example currently reads NOVEMBER 1969.
That does not necessarily mean the watch was manufactured in 1969. Calendar inserts could be changed or reset, and the bracelet itself predates 1969. Instead, November 1969 is best understood as a fascinating snapshot of the watch’s life — a date someone, somewhere, actually chose to put on this little calendar more than half a century ago.
The case back is marked:
STAINLESS STEEL BACK
ALUMINUM
1337841
The combination of the early-1960s styling, Swiss 17-jewel mechanical movement, Chatillon branding, Sheffield Merchandise marking, and Speidel calendar bracelet makes this a particularly interesting example of mid-century horological history.
